Principles about earthly riches

Principles about Earthly Riches

Of all the topics in Holy Scripture; none more often make people squirm and uneasy about the gospel message than teaching about money. However; Our Lord himself often alluded to money in his teachings (Luke 16:1-13, Mathew 18:23-35)) and how we steward our finances says a lot about what we believe. The use of money is inescapable in this life and it is important that Christians have a Biblical perspective on the acquisition and use of money in this world.

1)     All riches in the world belongs to the Lord and people are merely stewards thereof.
Psalm 50: 9-12
I will not take a bull from your house,
Nor goats out of your folds.
10 For every beast of the forest is Mine,
And the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know all the birds of the mountains,
And the wild beasts of the field are Mine.
12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you;
For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.

2)     The Lord is sovereign in the distribution of all riches.
Ecclesiastes 9:11, Proverbs 22:2
11 I returned and saw under the sun that—
The race is not to the swift,
Nor the battle to the strong,
Nor bread to the wise,
Nor riches to men of understanding,
Nor favor to men of skill;
But time and chance happen to them all.
Rich and poor have this in common:
The Lord is the Maker of them all.

3)     God requires faithfulness in all our stewardship
Mathew 25: 14-30
stew·ard·ship:
The job of supervising or taking care of something, such as an organization or property.

4)     God’s priority for our lives is the Heavenly Kingdom… Not earthly acquisition of things
Matthew 6:19-24
Lay Up Treasures in Heaven
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The Lamp of the Body
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is [a]good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is [b]bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
You Cannot Serve God and Riches
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and [c]mammon.

5)     True Riches is found in being contented with what God has given us.
1 Timothy 6:6: Godliness with contentment is great gain.

6)     Debt is a hindrance to Kingdom work.
Proverbs 22:7: “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.

7)     Thinking about leaving behind a Godly legacy helps us to guard against foolish or short sighted financial expenditures.
Proverbs 13:22: A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.
